Daisy's Story

Daisy was born March 1999 in Truro Hospital, Cornwall, England. Daisy is the first child of Marie and Selwyn, she now has a sister Rose born February 2003. Daisy's family live an eventful life in Exeter, Devon, England.
Daisy's has spent most of her life in and out of hospitals. Mainly, at the Royal Devon and Exeter in Devon, Birmingham Children's Hospital, St Bartholomews and the Royal London Hospitals and then at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto, Canada.
Aged only 13 months, Daisy was diagnosed with a rare cancer known as Retinoblastoma (cancer of the eye). Daisy in fact had the rarest form of the disease Bi-lateral Retinoblastoma (both eyes). Daisy received an aggressive program of treatment that included Chemotherapy, Laser and Cryotherapy. In July of 2000, Daisy's right eye had to be enucleated (surgically removed) and she was put back on Chemotherapy. For the next year or so, the tumors recurred and was now treated with Radiotherapy (radiation) and then subsequently with Plaque. In 2003, the parents were faced with the decision of enucleating this eye as well. At this point, parents decided to come to Toronto for a last chance.
The specialist had agreed to try Daisy on their research protocol if the tumors showed signs of reacting positively to treatment. This treatment would take up to six months.
The cost was considerable and parents requested donations to help pay for Daisy's treatment. This was when the original Daisy Fund was created.
